DECEMBER 2020 – JANUARY 2021 ISSUE
In this issue we take a look at the kiosk and digital signage industry over the course of last year and how it has reacted to the pandemic. As the world continues to battle Covid-19, innovators are working to reduce human to human contact in public spaces without disrupting the natural flow of society. Gene Halsey, General Manager at TES America believes that touch is here to stay and looks at the efforts underway to prevent the spread of disease whilst improving people’s lives.
Founding kiosk and digital signage company Tecastic, Inc. in early 2020, little did Ryan Doak know then that the year would hold some rather large hurdles for the industry. In his article, Doak considers that although many industries are currently closed for business, they are very busy focusing on the strategic plan for when they reopen.
We also look at the touch-free future of interactivity in retail. Years ago, when touch screen interactivity approached mainstream adoption in retail, customers had to adapt to a new workflow. Customers’ understanding, trust and use of touch-interactive signage took time, but slowly they became accustomed to engaging with displays to navigate on-screen content.
Fast-forward to retail’s current pandemic recovery effort and we’re at a similar crossroads. Jeff Hastings, CEO, BrightSign believes shoppers are more careful than ever, taking steps to avoid touching surfaces unnecessarily. Isn’t it ironic that the interactive shopping experience we pushed for so many years is now something shoppers have been trained to avoid out of concern for their health?

THE UBIQUITY OF TOUCH IS HERE TO STAY
A major effort is underway to reduce human-to-human contact in public spaces without disrupting the natural flow of society — in an effort to prevent the spread of disease while improving people’s lives in the meantime.
After running NV3 Technologies, co-founder Ryan Doak shifted to pursue an opportunity in the kiosk and digital signage space in early 2020. Little did we all know that 2020 would hold some rather large hurdles for the industry as a whole.
